I use a DeWalt 621 2hp softstart with a foot treadle from Harbor Freight. Never had a problem. Takes about 20 seconds. Use eye, ear, protection, and do it naked if you want to avoid dust everywhere. Of course, it raises the "fear factor". :-)

  I use  a $180, 3/4 horse Freud soft start variable speed at half the rpms. It's not near so scary.  I always have my thumb on the off switch. Done many no problems. Stay focused & undistracted.
