Truly, one must always take great care when forming theories on limited data.

Or, as Mark Twain observed: "Indians always walk single file. I know this because I saw one do it once."

More info on the broken becket I experienced last week. Mine broke at the mid-point of the 90 degree bend. When I cut the remaining bend off to get back into straight wire, the wire "crunched" when cut rather than the usual resistance as if it had crystallized. Another 1/4" down the wire it was normal. Making a new becket bend and reinstalling the wire worked fine.
I agree with you Jurgen, in 20 years and 4,000 pianos I have never encountered this.
