I rough them in with a 1" belt sander, and use a file to finish off, the notches etc.

Large flat file with one of the thin edges ground smooth so I can get into the notch without cutting in the wrong direction.
If there is a lot of material to trim, I use a Dremmel with a side-cutting bit to rough it out first. Be careful if you do that, it can get away from you.

Alan, what method of trimming keytops do you use? I'm referring to the overhang on the sides.
Thanks,

Well Alan, of course you only needed to ask for a glass of water and the cookies may have been forth coming...

Spent several hours in a nice home today, installing keys newly topped, regulating, etc. Didn't take a lunch break because it was way out in the country, so I got pretty hungry in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, for the duration of the time I was there, the young lady was baking batch after batch after batch of wonderful-smelling chocolate chip cookies for some church social or something.
Was I offered any? Noooooo.
I have other people invite me to lunch or dinner, sometimes, and have been handed many a plate of cookies or homemade bread, etc. But not this time.
So I made extra noise and scattered keytop shavings all over the place.
