Resurrections have been known to have taken place

Try to let the string movement die down between blows.  Rapid, forte blows 
with the string tension lowered can cause string breakage (it's happened to 
me).

But it's gentler than dropping tension enough to remove the string from the 
hitch pin and rolling a loop to revitalize it.
