I think Terry's nailed it. It seems a bit of a stretch to imagine how growing brackets would cause strings to break or tuning instability, but I know they cause all sorts of problems. Hmmmm, let's see - brackets grow, grow, grow into pinblock, push pinblock up, bending plate, moving front string bearing points upwards, stretching strings - causing tuning instability and breaks? Well, that sounds kinda far out to me also. But IMHO, this service call sounds like fun to me. I would leave your fine regulating and tuning tools at home and be sure to bring a camera, car jacks, an air hammer, big crow-bar, sledge hammer, large cold chisel, a saws-all, and maybe a good metal-cutting torch - maybe even a portable engine lift. I'm really not kidding about some of this. First thing I'd do is see if hammers are blocking against strings. If they are, you've got growing brackets. If the brackets have pushed the action top way into the pinblock, that may be the entire ball of wax. Or maybe its something else. But if it is the bracket thing, you may have to either break brackets or remove keybed to get action out of action cavity. Oh, and don't forget safety glasses. Pictures, pictures, please. I'd be salivating if this were my appointment. Oh, what fun! Please report back!
