And AB Chase, Ivers and Pond, Wing and Sons, Knabe, Ludwig, etc., etc., etc.  People were TRYING to make good pianos in those days.  They were meant to last many lifetimes, judging by the craft and materials put into them.

You're kidding, right? Have you not encountered a Stieff upright. 
There's also Mason & Hamlin, Bush & Lane and many more. 
 
I would however place S&S uprights and Acrosonic spinets in the same sentence.
