I'm not sure of the answer, but I do know this: the felt that Steinway uses on the trichord notes leaves much to be desired. It tends to be too weak to last, and many times ends up tearing. A good way to prevent tearing is to depress the damper pedal while putting in your temperament strip, so that the dampers are all lifted and the trichord felt wont be in between the strings as your temperament strip pushes the strings together. If you don't keep the pedal depressed, the outside strings of the trichord notes will be pushed toward the center string by your strip, and the trichord wedges may be "locked" into the strings. As soon as you play those trichord notes, the felt will tear because the strings are pinching it and holding it down, but the damper head is rising as the key is played.
