Avery, Hard to know for sure when communicating through email, but I think Jurgen was kidding about "more is better" where key punchings are concerned. I believe fewer are better. When we level and dip keys, we also consolidate (a dial pressure gauge is handy for this) and arrange in hierarchical order (largest to smallest, bottom of the pile to the top). Anyone out there think we are wasting time? If yes, let's here about it (maybe I DO have better things to do than measure piles of punchings)! IMO, you get a much more stable regulation with fewer punchings! Take out some of the pinks/blues/greens and put in a thinner type cardboard punching (or two) and then even it out with the others, JMO! That amount, and up to 12, corresponds to NY Steinway specs, at least on the recent D I worked on. Funny, those Youro Peon piano companies - you know: Grotrian, Schimmel and so on - seem to think you shouldn't put more than 4 paper/cardstock punchings under the front rail felts. I think they are just being cheap. A real luxury piano has LOTS of paper and cardboard it it. Too bad the dip is already so shallow on the Hamilton, otherwise a person could add more paper!! No big deal, not great ,but no real major problems. Went back last week after a prolonged cold snap here in the NE. Key dip was no more than 8mm and regulation was terribly off as you would expect. Looked under fronts and found about an average of 8-10 punchings under each key, also key height is off on several naturals. I'm open to any suggestions besides gasoline and a match to correct. My first thought is to redo height and dip and then regulate, but could this be a key frame problem? Humidity level has not been over 30% in this room.
