Is there a subsitute for sheet metal? I don't have a shop. I
wonder if they still make these metal rulers that were kinda fat
and flimsy, and is so would that work?

I don't know what kind of ruler you mean, but mine is just a
piece of fairly stiff sheet metal, about 4" x 5", with about
3/4" of the top edge folded over at a 45 deg. angle or so.
