puzzler: vertical damper problem

I brought my upright piano tilter along just in case this was it....but
it wasn't.

For those who didn't see the post yesterday announcing the answer to
this puzzler, here it is.

....and the winner is: Alan Bernard. The action rail split at the
treble-most damper rod hanger bracket (the one that bears the brunt of
the push from the dowel). Taking out lost motion by turning the nut
down only provided more leverage to split the rail further, so that
highest bracket moved up and down with the kindling it is attached to
(rather than staying put like its supposed to so that the damper rod
rotates).

Thanks to everyone who responded to this. It has been yet another
learning experience!

 Alan E.

Aha (?) ... split action rail that holds the damper rod hardware?

Screws stripping out on the bottom board on the piano, creating lost
motion as the bottom gradually lowers?
