aftertouch vs jack escapement

I use a wire gauge (piece of coathanger in an "s" shape) to quickly verify 
the right checking distance, before worrying about jack clearance distance 
in an upright.  Hold the key down and move the hammer to the right distance, 
if necessary.  Checking can be so random that it's hard to gauge aftertouch 
correctly.
