That particular hunk of spruce is part of one of the backposts from the old Starr upright that I learned to tune on.
Works much better as a belly rail brace than it ever did as a backpost (sumpin' was wrong with that thar old pie-anna!).
And a belly rail brace like this, IMHO, pales when compared to the original belly rail structure on the Knabe I am working on - that belly rail is a full six-inch by eight-inch hunk of white ash (think baseball bat). IMHO, even a braced belly rail like on this Baldwin or a Steinway pales is stiffness/mass compared to a railroad tie like that on the Knabe.

This to me makes the most sense. It replaces the wimpy treble "resonator" strip with something substantial. Nice job. I've taken to putting a beefed up bar here as well. Not this gi-normous but why not?
