How would you expect to set the strike line on a 1923 "M", please ?

P.S. Thanks for all the responses on the wire ! I
suspect that the "black stuff" found, to some degree
on all wire, is some sort of mill lubricant. I wipe it
off with paper towels. ( Though it might help
rust-proof, a bit. ).
