In this area people are stripping new houses under construction for the cooper wire. Lately they have removed the cooper fuel lines from propane and oil tanks and causing a big expensive clean up for the homeowner. A few people have been electrocuted trying to removed wire from electric sub-stations. In the news this week stainless steel draft kegs are getting stolen from business for the same reason. All this for a few bucks. I’ve played around with it, forming a jig to help spin the copper off. If you have a young son it is worthwhile, as the clean copper is fetching around $2/lb. It’ll give him some pocket money. The larger ones are obviously more profitable. The fine wrapping on the smaller ones gets pretty difficult to remove and you don’t get much copper for your efforts. Oh, the jig was just a loop maker stuck in a vise to hold the loop end of the wire. I then chuck the other end up in the cordless drill, pull the core wire tight and spin it while peeling off the wrapping. Kind of a reverse of the mfg process. Hello list, Does anyone know of someone who recycles the metal from dead piano strings? I have a couple of sets of bass strings that I've been trying to figure out what to do with. I hate to see them go in the trash.
