As someone else mentioned this sounds to me like a longitudinal mode
frequency.  Change the pitch of the note and see if the pitch of the
whine changes or if it goes away.

I did a little needling to no avail.  It wasn't much, but I didn't want
to
back into another problem.

Paul,
Once upon a time, I found a bass damper on a low end oriental grand that

leaked, and defied all rational checks.  It turned out that I needed to 
voice it down, it was very "hot" and it "over-excited" the string.
Needling

made the leak go away.  Good luck.
