Steinway supplied pianos to Aeolian who equipped them with the Duo-Art player
action, not AMPICO. In later years (during the Depression) some Steinways had
AMPICO player actions installed, but these are quite rare. Having said that,
a Model B Steinway is an unusually large player, so its value to player buffs
is increased. Remember, though, that the grand cases were lengthened by 6
inches to accomodate the Duo-Art mechanism so it may not be a "B" (to confuse
things further, there was a Model B AMPICO, but this had nothing to do with piano
size). Also, Steinway player models were different than standard their
standard grand designations (XR, AR, etc.). See this posting on the list in 1996:

(https://www.moypiano.com/ptg/pianotech.php/1996-February/005781.html) . It has some good
information. Be sure you have a good player tech check the piano out before buying.
Pneumatic player values have sunk in recent years due to the electronic stuff,
but Steinway is still on the higher end. Dealers continue to junk the player
actions and convert the pianos to non-players. If properly restored, your
Steinway should be worth in the $20-25k range, I'd guess, but they're not very
easy to sell.

Philip,

There is one other option. For a short time, Steinway had licensed Welte
Mignon to install player systems in their pianos. This system also had a drawer,
like the Ampico. The red label Welte is about the rarest player system put into
a Steinway. I am pretty sure that this relationship had ended by 1922 or so.
