First, so no debris is impacted into the separation restricting closure. Secondly, to align the drill hole on both sides of the separation because if drilled before closing, the holes form a slight "V" when the sides are drawn together restricting closure. Clamp, drill, insert bolts, glue, tighten with clamps and bolts. Sometimes a carriage bolt can not be used because the soft facer board on the back just causes the bolt head to sink in crushing wood.
