Hi Barbara, For what it's worth, I would not use the Crescendo punchings in this application, although they are great for practically everything else, including let-off dowels. There is very little compliance in the felt, true, but they seem to be quite noisy even with moderate jack spring tension. You might want to try the newest supplies from Pianotek in this particular instance. The replacements have really big, fluffy jack button punchings--which put the jack position too far forward and if I bend the spoon backward to get the jack back far enough, there isn't enough tension on the spring that's held by the loop on the jack. (Follow me?). Instead of trying to compress the questionable punchings on the jacks, I think it's easier to compress a set of replacement punchings that I have which look less wild than those on the replacement jacks, but still need compressing. Then I'll simply replace the original poofy ones. The punchings are on my bench, under a cutting board that is weighted down. Here's the question--(drum roll): How long should I leave the punchings under the weight? This piano belongs to a friend and it will be a good project for her to replace the punchings. Hmm, I'll have to think of a few other little jobs for her to do... There appears to be at least 3 thicknesses available. Even after compressing, I don't think it will stay, unless you possibly dampen them, or something. John M. Upside, a little more stability for the jack position. Downside, an increase in jack noise so be careful. I suggest you experiment before you do all 88. Usually there is some room to reposition the jack so take a careful look at this option.
