Yamaha jacks are made from acrylonitrile-styrene (http://www.ides.com/generics/AS.htm) and no, not to save money. By using this material Yamaha can make a light weight, durable jack that does not require burnishing. If you found a way to save money, you'd be making a whole action, not just one little part, don't ya think?
