Subject: A Taxing Tale

As a Massachusetts resident I am required to file state income tax. Last
year I was due a refund from the state. A whopping $56. Instead of my refund
check, I got a Notice of Intent to Assess. Seems it wasn't an audit as it was
not required that I respond. However, if I wanted my $56 I had to provide
them, by mail, with copies of all my receipts, a copy of a list of all my
customers including their addresses and phone numbers, and a copy of a list of all my
suppliers with addresses and phone numbers. So...I picked an average month
and then multiplied by twelve, just to get an idea what would be involved to get
my $56 check from the state. It was going to cost more than the refund check
to make all the copies and send them!

Now this year I'm paying them. I feel cheated!
