What I want to know is - did you have a "fishing" license to catch that
thing?  Come on Terry, let's come clean now..

Hunk of hardwood in the shape (somewhat) of a fish, like the piece of wood
in the picture below:

 



 

 

The fish is bonded to the rim to reduce the amount of soundboard area to the
rear of the bridge in the high treble. This increases soundboard stiffness
by the mere fact that the soundboard is thus smaller (which is generally
beneficial in the high treble) and eliminates excess high treble soundboard
area that appears to be of no value (and in fact appears to be detrimental
to piano tone and soundboard longevity).

 

Note to Ron Nossaman and/or Del Fandrich: I feel comfortable talking all
about how to build this stuff, but I lack confidence when I start to talk
about the how and why this or that affects a belly system. If my two
sentences above are faulty, please point it out for the benefit of all
(especially me!).
