It is ever so much nicer to drill the block in the piano through the bushings. Then your holes line up perfectly. I made this crude base for my drill press head. I had a machine shop make the column- it wasn't expensive. My brother welded it to a steel plate which I screwed to some birch plywood. It scoots nicely on the pinblock plank and stays put after you get it there. You can tip the plank to whatever angle you want. Having a helper hold the vacuum close by really helps, and it keeps the bit cool and sharp. But to your immediate problem, I'd try soaking them with 2-3 drops of water, maybe a little surfactant added to help it soak in. I drilled the block outside of the piano, not a thought about bushings. The way that I string, I coil the string round the pin and punch it into the hole with the bushing in place. Splits every time. The bushing hole diameters are all .250 but the 2.0 tuning pin is oversize by .031 Drilling the bushings to match the tuning pins is tedious and still about 50% will split. What am I missing? Thanks for any help. Gene -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
