As has been noted, there are cases where the Crescendos may not be the best option, and of course personal preference always plays into it as well. The fact that top end companies such as Steingraeber (and others) are using this felt is an unspoken endorsement. I have also heard of using hammer hardener on FR punchings. To suggest this as an alternative to Crescendo punchings is naive. The Crescendo felt has a certain firmness and density, but the proprietary felting method used, which is akin to the famous Wurzen hammer felt, preserves the natural resilience of the wool fiber.
