OK, this particular thread absolutely BEGS for this story to be told. . . .
Ages ago, I had heard this story from numerous sources over the period of a
couple of years. I was incredulous until I eventually got verification directly
from the late, great David Abell (prominent L.A. Yamaha dealer) that this
tale is indeed verifiable.
In the mid-1980s, a rock star who was at what would turn out to be the peak
of his fame, was being interviewed by a woman from a popular nightly TV
magazine show. The interview was being taped in the home of this particular rock
star (who shall remain nameless, but let's just say he was famous for flying off
his Axel and was the lead singer of a band named after Weapons N' Flowers.)
The interviewer was querrying him on his newfound wealth and celebrity status.
She said it must be great to now be able to afford just about anything he
wanted. He said naw, these newly purchased surroundings and possessions really
meant nothing to him. He was just a down to earth guy and he could take or
leave money. The interviewer wasn't quite buying it, so she pressed him a bit
more. After a few rounds of this, our rock icon took that as a challenge to
prove his point. At that, he stood up and said something like "none of this crap
means anything to me", and took an axe to his brand new Yamaha CFIII. He
then proceeded with all his might to shove it out his second-story picture
window. I don't know all the details of the fate of this instrument other than that
he apparently totalled it and ended up buying a replacement. ... That his
career has since faltered and he's now near bankruptcy absolutely, positively
breaks my heart.
(Interesting side note: this particular singer is noted for having his piano
tuned 1/2 step flat "because it makes his voice sound better.")
