Ed, Thanks for the reply! Yes, as a matter of fact, the serial number is 313856. The rail is still a brass encased, uh, dowel except it doesn't have the usual profile. It's square. Rather strange. I was told that there were some war-era Steinways that used a different rail due to the lack of brass at the time.
