It sounds like this has been argued before, but from my perspective there are only two relevant points (if I'm missing any, I'm sure I'll be informed): 1. It's much easier to ignore what I've already read if the new message is on top. 2. If I have missed some or all of the previous discussion, I appreciate having it in the message instead of having to go looking for it. If it gets too long or contains something other than plain text, judicious editing is appreciated. Otherwise, why bother? Text occupies very little bandwidth and memory. One other minor point: IMHO, messages thanking a particular individual or sending some other non-relevant (to the rest of the list) message would be more logically done in a private email. It seems like a small thing but it's a cumulative waste of time for the rest of us (to those who have lots of time and appreciate all the warm fuzzy aspects of this listserve, I apologize. :-) I guess this is a back-handed way of saying how much I value the information I've gleaned from this list - thanks to everyone who contributes.
