[pianotech] Broken Plate

My event happened back in the 60's on a 3 year old Gulbransen console.
First tuning raised pitch 15cts. 2nd week client called dealer and I
returned to re-tune. I inspected inside, front and back, nothing visible,
but center section was very bad. Pulled back up to pitch. 3rd week, client
again called dealer. Returned and removed kick board for another inspection
(big mistake). Could find no visable flaws. Piano again low in octave 4-5.
Started to tune again. It went off like a shot gun and a hitch pin struck my
leg and proceeded across the room. As I rubbed my leg the lady came out of
the kitchen. Without looking at the fracture in the low treble I informed
her what had happened. Note: When raising pitch on uprights.. leave the
kick panel on. The dealer did return and replace the piano. It never
happened again, and I raise pitch on pianos every week.
