I remember visiting a former well known piano factory. The guy doing the 1st chipping had a wood frame which was supported just over the strings about  6" in front of the bass bridge.  When I asked what it was for he just said, "don't ask".  I still love this business.

  That makes sense, although I still suspect that the straight shot out the end is rare and would depend on a number of factors lining up just right.  

   

  Maybe we should keep quiet about all this - if OSHA gets wind of it, we'll probably have to start installing protective shields at the end of the piano and wear masks and armor to tune.
