Go and listen to a couple of the concert grands that he's worked on. Call the place where he supposedly works and ask them what they think of his work and voicing jobs. I would tune it ON the day I voiced it if it were me but that's my personal preference. For starters, make sure that it is indeed in proper regulation before having it voicing. Make sure the strings are leveled and seated on all bridges. Make sure that the hammers are mated to the strings and strings mated to the hammers. This makes a lot of difference just by itself in the tone of the piano. Have it tuned and THEN voiced. Voicing can take more than one setting to complete it depending on what might be needed if anything. Only the technician can say for sure in looking at the piano what are causing your overtones. Voicing may reduce that if voiced properly but, the technician will have to make sure that voicing will actually cure it and that the cause is not something else. It's been well regulated and I will tune it the day before it is voiced. I was thinking of having the hammers needled to try reduce some of the apparent overtones in the lower octaves. It is quite cumbersome when recording. a) How can I ensure the piano tech that I will hire can properly perform this work? (he apparently does a lot of the tuning/voicing of local concert grands and has been doing it for 25 years, or so I've been told.) b) Is needling the recommend technique for my situation? I just don't want to find that I'm unhappy with the result, and then have a set of 'damaged' hammers (essentially) Any other information would be helpful. -Tyler _____ New!
