You may be right about this, Joe.  I, for one, have never intentionally used any flagpoling techniques while tuning, and have never broken a tuning pin.
 
I have, however, broken a tuning hammer, while tuning a piano just like the one under discussion in this thread.  Fortunately, I had a backup - a cheap "student" hammer that miraculously survived the remainder of the tuning.
