Since universal bass strings do not work even somewhat well, just quit offering them. Take the measurements, call Mapes and they will have a decent sounding string within a week. They will have to pay for the string + shipping + markup and your return service call. I don't have universal strings and I don't even talk about their existence. Of course the real problem is you have already invested in a set of universal bass strings.
