I must agree. I worked at Steinway as a Tone Regulator and Inspector for 11 years and no one really liked the model S. We made mostly M's with L's being next, but not too many S's. Most were fancy cases that people were buying for looks rather than a good sounding piano. A piece of furniture with a Steinway name to impress

  James,

As far as I know, Steinway designed and produced the Model S rather reluctantly, and does not really "push" it. They never geared up for producing a lot of them (only one rim press at the factory in New York) - and you won't find too many in dealers' showrooms either. I was once told that company policy has been to produce as few as they can get away with - and push people to the M and L (now O) models. Let's face it, it isn't easy to get good sound out of a 5 foot piano no matter how well built or designed, and Steinway did not want too many of them out there for that reason... At least that's the scoop I got thorough Bill Garlick when he was the Technical Services guy at Steinway (seems like so long ago...)
