It might be a sympathetic vibration from somewhere you don't expect. Like a bleed through on a bass string.
I have a length of wood with a felt strip glued to it, and I hold it on the strings in different areas.
I think it was in a Bill Spurlock's class where this was mentioned.

Check the strings between the hitch pins and the bridge: if you put your hand on the strings there, and the ringing stops, then just put in some braiding.

I am working on an old Haines Bros. 5' grand with lots of issues, including significant cracks in the soundboard, but I don't have a clue why the sound is ringing on. I have regulated the dampers, which apparently were replaced a few years back, but even when I put my hand down on the strings I can't stop the sound. Any ideas?
