Fly finishing referred to the "moving" of the case pieces through the
finishing/refinishing processes.can't say where it started.

We called it fly-finishing or first regulating, and don't ask me why it was
called fly-finishing. Winking smile emoticon

Patrick:

It is the process of locating the action on the key frame (unfinished) and
in the action cavity so that all dimensions are satisfied--fore and aft,
laterally, and elevations. Generally a forefinisher starts with only the
keyset (with no capstans or backchecks), the strung piano, and the unshaped
wood blocks which the action brackets rest on.

It's origin is unknown to me; most likely a factory job designation.

But boy is this going to be fun.

Paul,

I am unfamiliar with the term "forefinish." Makes me feel like creating
pseudo-synonyms like "futurepast?"

Dictionary reference (maybe the unabridged OED) ?
Inquiring minds ...

I am going to be starting a forefinishing job on a 1905 Steinway A within a
few weeks. It's a new key set with bare keys, so this past discussion on
magic lines and capstan/whippen has been a most interesting refresher. I
already have the action support block set, and a copy of Michael Mohr's
rough directions.

Does anyone out there have any other literature or links or procedural
guides to forefinishing?

I am quite comfortable figuring it out, but would appreciate any and all the
help I can get.
