[pianotech] idol voicing

Voicing for a big hall is a totally different animal. You voice to reach the back row. What sounds harsh at the bench can smooth out quite a bit 25 rows back. Experienced pianists are used to thinking that way.

A few years back, I went throught the Steinway factory training and they took us to Steinway hall to see the concert pianos. There was one D there that was so bright and harsh that I wondered how it could even be tuned. They told us that it was the most chosen of all the pianos by the performers. Go figure.

I have also noticed that the pianists in the mega church venues (the ones with the drum sets and guitars on the platform in the sanctuary) also want that horrible sound. Perhaps it's so they can hear themselves over all the amplified music they are trying to blend with. These pianos are frequently string breakers as well.
