Marc
Yes, Bolero would be fun to conduct ( and play). What a great show-off piece. Our kids wanted us to tackle that this year but the expense of renting the Rhapsody ( $950 for 3 weeks) hit the purchasing budget hard. I think Bolero is only available as a rental as the copyright is still in affect.
As far as my favorite rendition of the Rhapsody, Jon Nakamatsu's recording with the Rochester Phil is one of the most cleanest and refreshing recordings I've heard to date. I think it was done in 2006. The concert prep work was superb. Kudos to the piano tech who was responsible for that piano. Excellent work!!!

Tom...what a fantastic story and experience. My all time fave version of Rhapsody in Blue is by Bernstein/NY Philharmonic on Columbia Records circa 1960's...great piece and wish I could be there to see you conduct and hear your daughter play...one proud Dad indeed. My alltime dream has been to conduct Bolero with the Portland Symphony Orchestra here (I am also a 45 year drummer!)...so enjoy your dream realized...and have a great time...and keep your feet grounded on the podium (g).

They all want to spread the wings, Tom. It's nothing personal. My wife and I "lost" two sons that way, One went Colorado and the other to Florida. But then it was wonderful to go to see them on vacation.

Don't I know it. We are in the planning stages of moving her 700 miles away for college in the fall. There's going to be a big void in our household when she moves onto her new world. Gosh how I wish she would have chosen a college closer to home. Oh well.....

I have to say I'm one proud father who is beaming ear to ear. As many of you are aware, I have a multi-faceted career as piano technician, symphony musician, private clarinet teacher, AND conductor of one very fine youth symphony.
We've been in concert for the past month doing a very aggressive program:
              Eggmont Overture- Beethoven
              Vivaldi G min. Violin concerto
Rhapsody in Blue- Gerswin ( Laura Servinsky)
              Polvetsian Dances - Borodin

My high school daughter is the featured pianist for the Rhapsody in Blue and I gotta tell you, I am one happy, proud, and damn lucky Dad. Having the opportunity to conduct and have my own daughter as the solist in Rhapsody in Blue is one of the greatest thrills of my musical career. Words can't even begin to describe the sensations I've been experiencing.
The orchestra has been in concert for the last month and we have one more show to do. My father, who also is a professional musician, has never heard her play in public before. He'll be at our last concert and I have feeling the moment is going to get to the best of me. I have a feeling there's going to be a steady stream of tears out of my eyes, enough to fill a river by the time the piece ends.

Congrats Tom, I wish I could be there Rhapsody in Blue is one of my favorite pieces and to see it performed in this fashion would make it so much more special. Enjoy, Remember and Treasure, they're grown and gone very fast!
How wonderful for you and her!!

For those of us who are not in the USA and do not have a US $ checking account, I wonder if perhaps Paypal might be a way to make a contribution without complicated international money orders. Perhaps someone with a US Paypal account would allow it to be used for this purpose, and would be willing to translate the total payments made each month for this purpose, into a Check?

          Best wishes,

          David.
          Thanks Barb, for that information.

I just had a conversation with my son,Chris. Here'e the scoop.

Even if the HO would accept the money, although we could deduct it as a business expense, John would have to declare the money he got from the HO as income.

We can give John as much money as we want, as a gift. However, we cannot deduct any of it, except that we can designate up to $600 as a "promotional" deduction, or as contract labor. By the same token, John does not have to declare any of the money we give him. The only time he has to report a gift is when it's more than $13,000 from any one individual.

The only way we could deduct the money we give him is if we gave the money to a charitable organization set up specifically for the purpose of accepting gifts. The charitable organization has to be set up and recognized according to IRS rules. Or we can set up a foundation, set up for the same purpose.

Perhaps if John's family or home town would set up a fund for John, then that is to whom we should send the money.

As much as we all want to help John, maybe we should wait a while before sending him money. But I'm sure he would appreciate cards and letters.

As a 501(c) (6) PTG is not set up to take tax deductible contributions. There is no advantage to running them through the HO.

I have just asked my son, a CPA, what the best way to handle the tax consequences for a donation to John. I haven't heard back from him yet, but perhaps instead of writing and sending the check directly to John, that we make the check to the PTG, and designate it for John. But then the HO would need to process that. Would the HO be willing to do this, would the Board need to approve this, or is this something Barbara can take care of in house?
