[pianotech] Chickering grand rim/plate gap

Hi All,

I looked over a 1923 Chickering 5'3" grand today for a potential purchase.
In pretty good shape and a fine working musical instrument in many ways. I
did see something however that I've never seen before (note: I'm relatively
new to tuning / tech'n, so the words 'never seen before' is a regular
occurrence for me). I searched the pianotech archive, but didn't get a hit.
Sorry I don't have / didn't take a picture.

Walking around the treble end of the piano and looking down inside the rim
as it follows the S bend towards the back, I saw a gap between the inside
rim wall and the plate. At first I was 'has this separated?' Is this a
repair? I could see the floor through the approx 3/8" (not measured). Just
through the S bend section. I then noticed there were a couple of wedges,
spaced and fit nicely in the gap, that kind of looked like original
equipment..so perhaps this was the way Chickerings of this era were designed
/ built? Hmmm.

Any experience on this kind of Chickering gap, or this kind of
problem/repair?

Many Thanks,

Andy Murphy
