The inner and outer rims were made separately, and assembled after the inner rim had soundboard, pinblock, plate, and strings were installed. The two rims didn't necessarily nest together all that accurately, so there are gaps, particularly where there are tight curves. The photo shows something similar. In this case, the outer rim in the treble was leaning inward to a degree making it very difficult to remove the plate, so I wedged it out some to square it up and get clearance to reinstall. I wouldn't worry about yours. If it were being rebuilt, I'd reinforce it, but otherwise not bother. It's not uncommon.
