Wim, when the action brackets expand, the action spread also increases. When I suspect this problem in a piano, I measure the action spread. If it is longer than the specs call for, I know the brackets have grown. Reducing the height sounds like a fun thing to try, but as others have said, it should be temporary. Please take extra precautions (gloves, face and body protection) if you are using a bench grinder or similar power tool. Just be prepared for more metal flying off than you want.
