I used to do this type of thing ....... most cases I'd put the piano on a grand skid and slide it up the stairs. Then in my later years, I found a guy that comes along at 6 foot 4 inches and 280 pounds and we'd "yard" that mutha up the stairs removing the lid, the front panel and the knee board to reduce weight. He'd take the bottom and I'd step lively backwards up the stairs. I've moved so many of these things (grands and verticals) up stairs using my legs mostly by wrapping a strap around my waist and walking backwards up the stairs while two big bozos pushed from below. It's put some excessive wear on the knee cartilage to the point where once in a great while the cartilage slips out of place from time to time and I have to gently coax it back into place. I've seen much younger people have worse knee problems that have moved far more pianos. I stopped moving pianos up stairs a while back and the easy moves I've priced myself out of the market so my yellow page ad will be pulled next cycle. My knees have not given me any grief for some months now and I've lost close to an inch in three quarters in height. At the age of 57 I've had to admit that my bones are starting to rattle around a bit much and my spine has some great looking curves to it. I refer the difficult piano moves to another mover ...... he's about half my age, about twice my weight, tall as ever and claims he takes a baseball bat to family get togethers just in case there's issues that need to be handled. Save your body for other things like getting to the piano's tuning pins without the use of a wheelchair, hiking, kayaking, chasing babes and fine dining.
