A debit card works exactly like a credit card. .... At the point of sale, they are functionally the same; the future implications are not the same. In the USA, you have greater protections, under the law, with credit card transactions, than with debit cards, with respect to "misrepresentation of the product or service", fraud, or identity theft. With a debit card transaction, the money comes out of your account almost immediately. With a credit card transaction, there is time to dispute transactions before they are irrevocably complete. Fraudulent use of a debit card can wipe you out in minutes! There are greater protections with credit cards, giving you more time to deal with fraud, and other such issues. Frank Emerson
