(You might need to make a double bend) If you wish to maintain the unimpeded movement of the damper wire through the damper guide rail bushing, you must make two bends. And this is not the first thing you would want to do. First attempt to align the damper wire by bending the wire between the guide rail and the damper head---this is where the contact is happening with the string. It also likely requires two bends, one to move the damper wire over from the string, another to re-align the damper head and felt back to the string. If the damper is still rising at an angle and contacting the string at the up position, then wire bends in the main portion of the wire as mentioned above are necessary.
