James, As a homeowner and a tech...my family never leaves our shoes on in the house. When I go to a client's home to service the piano, I always remove my shoes. There are times when the customer will say, "Oh, you don't have to do that." To which I reply, "I take them off at my own house..." As the homeowner/cleaning person/major breadearner I appreciate the courtesy of not having extra cleaning to do when rainwater or snow or mud or whatever are tracked in. While I never personally ask that a service specialist remove their shoes when entering my home, it is always appreciated. Of course I don't expect those with heavy lace up work boots to take the time to remove them, but I'm certainly pleased to see those folks vigorously use the mat at the door.
