The cost was about the same, in fact I think it was about $99 but now I update the maps every couple of months as updates come out and they're all free after the first fee. You might check for that option. I, too, did not want to pay for an annual update, and I imagine a whole host of others felt the same way. I believe that is probably the reason they went to the lifetime updates. The only limit is that if you sell your unit to someone else, they would have to buy a new update.
