Jim -

I have had good results using McCloskey's 'Man o' War' Marine Spar Varnish.
Have used it for the last 15 or so restring jobs (~8-10 yrs) with no
problems.  Available at many paint/hardware stores, in quantities much
smaller than 40,000 gallons - like quarts, for example - ;-)
