[pianotech] Fujan hammer vs. TSA?

We had Franz Mohr (famous Steinway tech) come to our town and the music
store where I take care of the pianos. He talked about his book and
experiences as a tech working with famous pianists. What made me think of
this reading your posts was that during his flight to our city, he had
checked his beloved tuning hammer he used for many years in with his
regular luggage and someone stole it, evidently during the inspection
process. He was quite visibly upset about it. Anyway, just thought I'd
throw that possibility out there. Pam Bero, Appleton, WI

I brought a Fujan hammer through TSA on a trip From Durango to Juneau this
summer. They did stop me and ask to see it. I offered to unscrew the
components, but it was not necessary. Carrying a copy of the PTG Journal
helped<G>

I've just checked in a small tool kit in my luggage when going to Steinway
or wherever )insured) What might be wrong with this. I'll never try to
carry on anything. If it's lost in luggage land, of course, I'm screwed, but
then would get all brand new tools. I always have another set of stuff in
the university shop for this very reason.

No real experience trying to fake out the TSA, but sending it ahead via
FedEx (or other carriers' equivalents) is a good way to avoid needless
headaches.

Has anyone had any experience with getting the Fujan
tuning hammer through airport security? I'm wondering
if the carbon fiber composite handle gets picked up by
the security x-ray machines. I'd like to be able to put it in
my carry-on bag, not check it. Several years ago, my old
one with the steel shaft wasn't allowed in my carry-on bag,
and I had to run back to the ticket counter to check it
instead.
