[pianotech] Retirement

Utter and absolute nonsense. Go back and
re-read whatever you think you read on
the IRS.GOV site. What happens if you
file an income tax return that shows
self-employment income and does not show
quarterly estimated tax payments made
sufficient to cover both your income tax
and social security tax obligations, you
will get a bill for late payment of
taxes plus a 50% penalty. Ask me how I
know... And if you still refuse to pay -
they will come after you. They prefer to
go after the little guy, who can't
afford to hire expensive lawyers...
(That part I avoided by paying up and
never making that mistake again). Yes
there are ways to opt out of social
security - if you are enrolled in other
government operated retirement schemes
recognized as legitimate substitutes for
Social Security. I believe there's
something about railroad workers and
enrolees in municipal employee type
retirement plans. And there are special
rules for clergy, farmers and fishermen
- but not exemptions. Of course you can
stop filing income tax returns - but
that in itself is a federal crime. There
is an awful lot of misinformation out
there being put out by anti-tax
activists - are you sure you didn't get
on one of their websites?
