Wim,

About 18 months ago, I was in Honolulu on the 4th of July, another really big firework night in the islands. I remember taking off about 9:30 pm headed for LAX and the airport weather was reporting smoke as the obscuring phenomena. As we climbed out, I remember seeing all of Honolulu, from Ewa Beach and Pearl Harbor all the way to Hanauma Bay completely obscured in smoke from a couple miles out over the ocean up to the mountains in the north. Everything had an eerie glow about it, like a foggy night. They really know how to do fireworks over there... Enjoy your respite!

Hau'oli Makahiki Hou!

But that was nothing compared to what happened at midnight. All of our neighbors came out and set off bottle rockets, firecrackers, sparklers, etc. etc. Not only was the noise deafening, but the gun powder smoke was unbearable. It lasted about 30 minutes.

Not only are there no houses near by, I figured the airport would not allow any kind of aerial firework. We'll be in the morning to asses the damage. Hopefully our house will still be standing.

From what I've heard, more permits and more fireworks were bought for this year than even before, not only to set them off this year, but rumor has it that a lot of people are saving them for next year.
