Speaking of different iterations of soundboard design projects, while looking for the rib press photos I came on a fairly unaltered one (Steinway O) from awhile ago. Original rib positions but with bass cut-off bar. No problems in the killer octave or treble. Bass end of the panel was thinned starting from about 2/3 of the way back and thinned down to about 4 or 4 mm at the bass end. Small amount of thinning behind the top of the treble bridge otherwise no diaphraspasms. Don't remember the grain angle but it's probably around 55 degrees. I think I did put a transition bridge on this one as I typically do. This is my basic no frills board design and it works quite well (I don't do it without the cut-off). Other features like radial patterns, more and smaller ribs, bass floats, fish all are added performance features but they also cost more. Sometimes the customer doesn't want to go that route. This still produces a very fine outcome as long as the ribs dimensions are calculated correctly.
