Barbara: Any good high mil plastic works well, even with lacquer. Double-sided tape carefully around the edges (thin strips). We had to save a Charles Steinway signature for a client last year on a plate that was otherwise in desperate need of refinishing. Works like a charm. I'll have to remember the petroleum jelly, though. P In a message dated 2/25/2010 8:27:46 P.M. Central Standard Time, piano57 at comcast.net writes: How did you save the decals? Many years ago, a friend who restores cars, told me to cover the decal that I wanted to save with petroleum jelly, spray the plate and then wipe off the jelly. It worked. The piano is long gone, so I don't know how the decal held up. Here's a couple of plate decals that are real classics that I wanted to save on a project I'm currently working on as they are not available any longer. Before and after photos. The differences in color are in part due to shooting with and without a flash. Then I want to put on a clear coat to preserve what is there. I might have to do a little of touch up and I will get an artist for that. Thanks for the input.
